Admissions FAQ
What does an educational consultant do?
An educational consultant provides strategic guidance to families navigating school admissions. This includes helping identify appropriate schools, clarifying timelines, preparing students and parents for interviews, and supporting families through decision-making. The goal is alignment and readiness—not advocacy or placement.
Do you guarantee admission to a school?
No. Ethical educational consulting does not include guaranteeing admission. Admissions decisions are made solely by schools and their team of qualified admissions professionals. Our role is to help families prepare thoughtfully, present authentically, and make informed choices.
Do you maintain familiarity with the Los Angeles independent school admissions landscape?
Yes. Through years of professional experience and continued engagement within the independent school community, Pivot Consulting has developed longstanding professional connections with admissions and leadership teams at various Los Angeles–area day and boarding schools. These relationships provide valuable perspective and insight into the admissions landscape; however, they are never used to influence or interfere with admissions decisions.
When should families begin working with an educational consultant?
Ideally, families begin the process 12–18 months before applying, particularly for competitive entry years. However, support can be valuable at any stage—from early exploration to last-minute transitions.
Do you work with international or relocating families?
Yes. Pivot Consulting works with families relocating to Los Angeles or the United States. We help families understand the independent school landscape, admissions expectations, and cultural nuances involved in the process. We offer admissions guidance and support in three languages–English, Mandarin and Spanish.
Do you offer test preparation?
Yes. We offer a structured ISEE preparation program led by experienced independent school educators. The program focuses on skill-building, confidence, and familiarity with the test format rather than test-taking shortcuts.
Do you write applications or student essays?
No. We do not write or edit student work. We provide guidance, feedback, and coaching to help students express themselves authentically and appropriately.
How many families do you work with each year?
We intentionally work with a limited number of families to ensure a high level of attention, responsiveness, and care. This allows for a truly personalized high-touch experience.
Is your service only for high income families?
Absolutely not. While our clients include families of all socioeconomic backgrounds, our work is centered on fit, readiness, and alignment. Families who value thoughtful guidance, discretion, and long-term planning tend to benefit most from our approach.
